When I first started to meditate, I realized my mind was like a wild horse, as
Spanish call it “el mustango”
When I first heard about “El mustango” the first thing that came to my mind was
a wild, untamed horse which I usually see in old western movies or the sports
car, mustang
I couldn’t help but notice we share the same qualities when it comes to
meditation.
My mind, running wild every time I try to tame it.
While I desperately attempt to concentrate my mind on any object I choose, my
mind starts acting like a wild mustang running around, discovering,
tasting, calculating, looking through everything in awe, with limitless potential,
just like trying to gobble up whatever is around itself at one go.
In order to gain its trust I realized I must be patient and consistent. I must show
up at the same place, at the same time everyday, without expectations.
In one hand holding a candy for my wild horse, in the other a gentle, loving, kind
attitude.
First I decided to set my mustang free so that it can roam in a space, which was
safe and surrounded by a stable fence. In my meditation practice that was
“breath awareness”, as breath gives our minds a focus which can be interesting
in many ways.
And I wait, and wait and wait with a candy (using different qualities of breath) in
my open palm, so that I can attract its attention.
First time when we met, we created a space where we felt at home with my
unlimited, creative, wild and magnificent, unique mustang for a nanosecon and it
moved away from me again, because there were many other things going on around it that needed paying attention to like sounds, sensations, objects, colors
etc.
But I stood still. Patient. Kind. With non-judgmental attention.
Time went by, day by day my mustang allowed me to create contact with it
longer and longer, and we started strolling side by side, even sometimes carrying
each other.
If you ever decide to taste some of that magnificent experience called
“meditation” start by setting an intention to show up to your appointment
with your own life.
If you keep showing up, everyday at the same time, at the same place with
kindness, consistency and patience after some time you allow your mustang to
roam in wider fields, while still standing at the same place, offering trust because
now you know it will come back and stay by your side when you need it to.
Time goes by, your mustang starts to learn its way back to you, no matter how
big the filed is.
One day it returns to you and stays with you longer, even though it is in its
nature to discover, run limitlessly across endless fields, it chooses to ride with
you, by your side or you may decide to roam the fields with it and discover YOUR
full potential!
That is the day, when you and your mustang will ride together at the limitless
boundless psyche without fear, in the field of your consciousness where all of
creation resides.
